On the 4th of February, Russian Center of Science and Culture in Kuala Lumpur held a meeting between the Head of Representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Malaysia Ayrat Akhmetov and Malaysian cosmonaut Faiz Khaleed.
Faiz Khaleed was selected from 11 thousand Malaysians to become one of the candidates for space explorers. In September 2006, he was selected as one of two final candidates to undergo astronaut training in Star City – Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC) and started preparing for the flight to the International Space Station. On 9th of October 2007 he was approved as a backup crew during the meeting of State Comission at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He was a back-up of the first Malaysian cosmonaut during the launch of Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft in 2007.
During the meeting the parties discussed possible cooperation in the fields of education and science. Faiz Khaleed noted the high level of teaching scientific disciplines in Russia and suggested on developing joint programs for teaching Malaysian children. Also, Malaysian cosmonaut accepted the invitation by Russian Centre of Science and Culture to become one of the organizers and participant of “Space Day 2020” at the National Planetarium Malaysia.
