Russian medical universities graduates have successful practice in more than 100 countries the world over

Medicine is one of the most popular study directions selected by international students at Russian universities. Russian universities have a rich history of training in medical specialities. The first medical college in Russia, Apothecary Chancery, was set up in the 17th century. At present, medical education is provided by more than 70 Russian universities. Applying to Russian Medical University Higher medical education in Russia is only available to intramural students. Length of study depends on medical specialty. For example, bachelor’s degree in nursing care is awarded after four years of study. A surgeon’s diploma requires eight to nine years of study. In the United States, medical students study for 12 to 18 years. Medical training lasts ten years in Great Britain and eight to ten years in Germany. A medical diploma in Canada requires four years of study at a medical school, and as many at a university. It is followed by three- to four-year internship, depending on speciality. In Russia, entering a medical university is possible after finishing school. Universities offer programmes in Russian and English. If you do not speak Russian, you can learn it at a preparatory department or take a language course at Russian Center for Science and Culture in KL. Aside from learning to speak Russian, preparatory departments train international students in other subjects to help them better prepare for future study. Prospective students have to take exams in the key subjects, biology and chemistry. A number of universities require taking additional entrance tests.

Bachelor’s degree at Russian Medical Universities

Nursing Care is the only bachelor’s programme available at Russian medical universities. Length of study is four years. 

General Practitioner Graduate Programme lasts six years. It has with a two-year specialty training option. 

Specialist’s Degree at Russian Medical Universities

Nursing Care and Pediatrics departments offer six-year specialist’s programmes. Nursing care training is available in Russian and English. Tuition fee depends on the town where the university is located and university specifics.

Medical Internship in Russia

Narrowly focused specialities, such as dermatovenerologist, gastroenterologist or orthodontist require an internship upon completion of specialist’s programme. Internship length of study is two to four years depending on selected specialty and the university.  Dentistry internship programme length is two years. Young doctors have in-depth training to gain practical knowledge in certain directions, such as therapeutics, surgery or pediatric dentistry.  Russian universities also offer internship programmes in English.

Postgraduate Studies for Medics

Russian medical university specialist’s course graduates can opt for postgraduate studies rather than internship. They have to enrol in a post-graduate programme. Lengh of postgraduate study at Russian universities is three years. After completing the postgraduate course, they defend a Ph.D. thesis. To enrol in a postgraduate programme, the student has to pass examinations in specialty and in English, present a portfolio of their research papers and pass an interview (each university sets its own qualification tests). Postgraduate courses can be intramural and extramural. After graduating from a Russian medical university, a majority of international students will have to pass the nostrification procedure (recognition of your diploma) which enables them to practice medicine in their home country.
